Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said that the 'Rooftop Solar Scheme' also known as 'PM Surya Ghar Free Bijli Yojana' will also be launched in the Financial Budget 2024-2025. The initiative aims to promote the use of solar energy in residential buildings through the provision of subsidy on the installation of solar panels. Switching to solar energy helps homeowners save on electricity bills thereby conserving energy and the environment. The scheme highlights the government's determination to increase the consumption of renewable resources in India.

Overview of PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana or Scheme

In August 2023, the Government of India, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the ‘Rooftop Solar Scheme’ for PM Surya Ghar Free Bijli Yojana under the 2024-2025 budget. Officially launched on 15 February 2024, the scheme aims to install solar panels in 1 crore homes and reduce the energy costs of middle class and low-income families. It provides a subsidy of up to 40% on the cost of installation, helps in fulfilling the green energy mission and creates employment opportunities. The program is estimated to save ₹ 75,000 crore to the government exchequer every year.

How does PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijlee Yojana work?

The scheme anticipates a subsidy of 60% of the solar unit cost for systems with capacity up to 2 kW and 40 per cent of the additional system cost for other systems with capacity ranging from 2 to 3 kW. The subsidy has been capped at the 3 kW capacity level. At current benchmark prices, this would mean a subsidy of Rs 30,000 for a 1 kW system, Rs 60,000 for a 2 kW system and Rs 78,000 for a 3 kW system and above.

How to apply for PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijlee Yojana?

  1. Firstly Visit the https://www.pmsuryaghar.gov.in/.
  2. To register, select your state, electricity distribution company, consumer number, mobile number, email, and follow the portal’s instructions.
  3. Users can log in using their consumer number and mobile number.
  4. Please fill out the form for the Rooftop Solar application.
  5. Obtain feasibility approval from DISCOM and then have registered vendors install the plant in your DISCOM.
  6. Once the installation is complete, submit the plant details and apply for a net meter.
  7. DISCOM will inspect the net meter installation and generate a commissioning certificate from the portal after completion.
  8. Upon receiving the commissioning report, submit bank account details and a cancelled cheque via the portal for a 30-day subsidy payment.
